It’s not okay to air your dirty laundry

I was reading posts on Facebook and one of my 'friends' posted she and and her son have mental health issues. Several offered positivecomments. One person spoke of judgment (the effects) and how all of us arealike. My reply to the lady who originally posted:

“Iapplaud you for being vulnerable and disclosing the 'realness' in your life. Inaddition to your courage, it takes confidence that you will be ok even ifeveryone decided to shun you. I rejoice in our differences, if we were all thesame we wouldn't come to love and appreciate our differences; subsequentlyevolve into a state of acceptance and compassion. Hugs and smiles yourdirection.”

The degree of ‘realness’ determinesfreedom.

I grew up believing ‘it’s not okayto air your dirty laundry’. My mother said to me, “When you get old enough I’lltell you. What you don’t know doesn’t hurt you and it won’t hurt me.” Insertinghumor here – I never “got old enough” as my mother passed with the ‘dirtylaundry’.

The degree of ‘realness’ determinesfreedom.

As we become comfortable with whomwe really are, (including though not exclusive), warts, cellulite, addictions, quirks– and mental health issues – we accept these are a part of being a ‘normal’ human.This is freeing!

With a blind eye to those things wehide there is a price, its freedom.

Reflections of You

Do you find yourself being irritableand short fused, complaining because people can't do things the way you wantthem done … sometimes life is miserable and unbearable for you and othersaround you ... Sound familiar?

We humans forget that other people are doing the very best they knowhow ... though in that moment we're self-absorbed and believe our needs are more important than anyone else.

There's a Universal Law - it's a known as reflection. Our behaviors and moods arereflected back...

Here's an example: I have been a crankywitch, rude and short-fused and no one can do anything right. I believenothing is wrong with me.

I want a job and a customer service position is available. I believe I am theperfect match … I can utilize all of my skills … communication is my greateststrength. I had the interview and like several other interviews, no return call.

I can continue to blame them for nothiring me - or - slow down and realize why I’m not getting a call back.

Thus, thelesson of reflection.

Using reflection as a method of digginga bit deeper ... it brings incredible benefits. Thatmeans letting go of blame, being rude and short-fused. My realization is if I want different, I need to be different. Reason enough for patience and compassion. Don't you agree?

Road Signs

Road Signs

Some of us take those road signs for granted - maybe a bit presumptuous attimes - such as a sign stating the speed limit. I ignore it and speed on by - -or how about not paying attention and missing the exit which perpetuates mebacktracking. Such is life - or is it?

With me being introspective, signs and cues are important contributions to mylife. There are those times I'm arrogant with my thinking - telling myself I'llget away with what I'm doing. Sometimes I do and then there are those times, itcomes back to bite me in the butt. So what's the big deal I say? It's the lawof average, right?

For every time that I 'get away' with something I know that's out of alignmentwith my values, I am compromising my integrity which has a direct impact on allof my life. The 'get away with' is error thinking.

Today I had a conversation with a woman who shared how bad things have beenthis past week. I asked her about the good things in her life - she shared a fewand resumed telling all of the things that went wrong. Her expectations weren'tmet. In the course of our conversation she came to realize that herexpectations are set so high they are impossible for her to reach.

I asked her to bring to mind someone that she admires and what about thatperson she admires. She shared "her friend is thoughtful" - I'mthinking to myself, now we're getting somewhere. The energy is shifting.

Being thoughtful is 180 degrees of unachievable expectations.

This woman intends to focus on "thoughtful" this week;thoughtfulness in others and in of herself and to keep a daily journal of her'finds'.

I found a road sign for myself embedded within her story as I am very familiarwith setting my expectations too high.

After our conversation, I checked my email. Wouldn't you know I had threeemails all delivering the same message: was I listening to my inner knowing? Ididn't need to ask if they were a road sign.

Upon reading them I quietly asked myself, am I being thoughtful to me, am Iacknowledging my essence as an expression of God or am I being pompous andtelling myself that there's so many things that I've got to get done, I don'thave time for me or for God? Ouch. Double whammy - error thinking.

Life is great!

I tried to buy elbow grease!

As a child my mother frequently sent me to thedrug store to purchase household supplies. One day as she was leaving to go towork, she gave me instructions to go see Mr. Bidgood and get some cleaningsupplies, and she said, "Make sure you get some elbow grease!"

Off Iwent to the drugstore. I collected everything and looked everywhere for thatelbow grease - being about 15, I was really frustrated as I had a timeline toget my work completed. Finally, I went up to the counter and told Mr. Bidgoodof my plight. He started laughing and his laughing escalated into a roar...eventually he told me that I had all of the supplies that I needed to clean. Irepeated my mother's strict instructions which induced his laughter, onceagain. He nodded his head and said, "Glenda, all those cleaning supplies won'twork unless you use elbow grease - and elbow grease means action."

As a metaphor... What in your life needs elbow grease?

I would have never tasted Universe’s bag of potato chips...

I had the opportunity of speaking to400 women who are administrative professionals. That much estrogen in one room was incredible! Oh my, we laughed, we stretchedbeyond our wildest imagination … can you imagine doing a dance – bringingclosure to the talk? We did!

It was so much fun!

It is said… what you put out returnsto you ten-fold… it’s really appeared with my speaking.

While I have the ability of beinginsightful, accumulating information and delivering it and beingpassionate about women’s issues and possible solutions ... the challenge of meputting myself in a hands-on growth opportunity manifested.

I’ve gone to some of the greatest ofteachers to learn the basics of presentation and the many styles … and whileI’ve practiced them, something was missing. It dawned on me what wasmissing: my experiences that make up a part of me.

The magic of self-discovery … when Istarted to disclose more about me – the personal issues of my life that I’veworked diligently to overcome, bit by bit, and weaving in possible solutions-- we connected! That’s what life is all about – connecting! This initself is empowering and motivating!

There were other speakers whoexcelled in their presentations. I viewed their perfected styles. I was soexcited to be a part of this team of professionals. Later one of the speakersshared, “you shoot from the hip and you’re spontaneous, which makes themcomfortable.” Yes!! And it was fun!These women got my authenticity.

While its important to try themaster’s teachings, the beauty of choice became apparent, wanting to beproficient at what I do, it required me to ‘listen to the sounds of my owndrum’ … how many times do we do things because ‘that’s the way it’s done’?Which launches more thoughts, what if I try and my approach flops -- oh mygosh! Will I live thru it? And what will others think? Putting myself at riskin front of 400 women… bends my thoughts to how many times in life that I’vebeen in horrible situations (some life threatening) weathered them and didn’tthink twice. I did what I needed to do to survive; yet at the time, it was tooscary, too much of a risk to interrupt those situations. With the magic ofintrospection, I use those times as my platform today as means of taking risksand being vulnerable, being the full package known as Glenda.

The feedback from countless womensupported their need for someone to speak about their situations. They offeredgratitude; they had some solutions to try. They seemed as jazzed as me. Oh my!!

Too many times we believe airing ourdirty laundry is taboo or we think complaining about it brings camaraderie.Something is amiss ...

Every day we are provided theopportunity of challenging our beliefs and grow and be who we want to be – ortalk ourselves into staying within our comfort zone, believing its good enough.

Bit by bit there are ways ofinterrupting a pattern that causes pain.

I would have never tasted Universe’sbag of potato chips … wanting and having more opportunities of speaking had Ilistened and believed my doubts and fears.

Because I risked, the return has beenbeyond my wildest imagination. Thank you!

Many will purchase gifts in hopes ofstrengthening relationships. They know they'll be loved even more ...

3 trees were needed, one for theexpensive designer decorations, another for entertaining and the third for allof the gifts – oops I forgot the small ones in the office, the kitchen, and thebedroom - don't forget the bathroom.

More is better. Spend more money – it’sbetter. Shut off the responsible switch and go into “Yes, Yes, Yes!” to everyimaginable gift – you know they’ll love it. Don’t think about the credit cardbill coming in – Bah-humbug! Stay with the bliss of shopping, it’s only once ayear! The ether of this shopping is so mesmerizing …

Overwhelm to Solution for Christmas Stress!

I’ve always enjoyed Christmas decorations, lights and thehoop-la-la around me. Operative words are “around me”. Year after year I’d makenew agreements to do it different, be more prepared and year after year, mystress level would be at an all-time high. I finally found a solution: ratherthan overwhelming myself with guilt and expectations, spending money alreadycommitted, getting stressed and depressed, I tapped. Tapping (Emotional FreedomTechnique) has allowed me to release the stress and the underlying behaviors,thoughts and feelings regarding Christmas – thus I’m able to make betterdecisions, sleep at night and enjoy the Christmas season in a whole new way.

I thought his name rectified my experience

I don't need a man to rectify my existence. The mostprofound relationship we'll ever have is the one with ourselves. - ShirleyMacLaine

I cringed when someone introduced their partner/husband/wife as their 'other half'.

When I married my ex-husband I became Mrs. Husband's firstand last name. It gave me value, an identity. I believed that my husband wouldgive me what I didn't have and his name was one of many ways he rectified myexistence.

Somewhere along the path of life I learned that I wasn'tenough and by attaching myself to someone, I would be whole.

Many years later my children's father and I divorced. Myother half – the person who rectified my existence was gone and once again, Iwas without an identity, though not for long.

Another man came into my life, this time a doctor. Iremember calling my mother exclaiming how I was in relationship with a doctor.This declaration trumped my typical conversation: my mother was impressed.

Eventually, the doctor and I went different directions andthe day came when realized I was co-dependent.

I went to work on myself and transitioned out ofco-dependency to being independent. I didn’t realize one was/is the shadow ofthe other. Oh gosh.

Many years later I learned (and continue) to practice beinginter-dependent. Learning to love and accept myself as a whole person has beenquite the experience.

Starve to death? I thought I would

I always thought I was going to “starve to death”. Anytime I’d run short on money (regularly)this fear would be at the forefront. One day I was especially stressed and sharingthis overwhelming fear with my friend. She asked me if I had ever starved to death.This question jolted my racing mind; well, almost. I shared how as kids growing up we were generally hungry, there was no snacking as the food we had was already designated for anothermeal and there were times there wasn’t enough to go around. Through this exercise I realized I hadn’tstarved to death. Oh wow! What a realization.

I love to cook and I’m quite creative. My daughter has said,“Mom your frig looks empty yet you can put together a really good meal. Amazing.” My cooking is from scratch (no boxes and fewcans). A few years ago friends of mineintroduced me to Sunday night dinner where several people joined, bringing adish. It was a wonderful experience. They moved to Ecuador and I continued theSunday dinner gathering.

Recently I was sharing with a friend I had been invited to aChristmas potluck and the foods I planned to take, he said you always providemore food than others. I didn’t have areply why, though what he said is true. This morning it came to me. I don’t want evera time where we need to stretch the amount of food – the possibility of someoneleaving hungry isn't necessary. Having plenty of food allows everyone to enjoy their entireexperience – good food, conversation and they leave full. If there are leftovers there’s alwayssomeone who is thrilled to be the recipient.

Interesting how (what seemed like) deprivation and how it has developedinto abundance. I am so blessed to have this gift of cooking and honored thereare so many who enjoy it. We all benefit.

It's there I know it is! See…

Lifeis too short to be complacent and accept 'life-suck' moments as reality. Yet as Iwrite this, I know of many who are caught in this limiting belief. I used tobe. It doesn't have to be that way!

Thematrix of who I am today is one that, well, I believe for all purposes I musthave decided to re-incarnate with the intention of cleaning up an incredibleamount of karma and learn to enjoy life's adventures. I've learned that most ofmy experiences have offered me the insight of being a better person and havemore to offer to those around me. This wouldn't have happened if I believed theconcepts of being complacent and 'life-suck' moments were to be my life'sdestiny.

Therewill always be 'life-suck' moments. It's how you view them. Life offers us theseas opportunities to grow. We can either "face our fears" (as my 8year old grandson tells me he needed to do in order to go in front of his classand share) or we can believe the fears and doubts and doing so, they multiply!Aren't you ready to give up being your own worst enemy?

Itstime for you to get off your duff! You've got more going for you than tosettle!

Mightyou ask, "How would I know if I'm my own worst enemy?"

Checkyour inner dialogue. Are your thoughts more positive or negative? Do theyinclude being supportive and looking at the events of your life as anopportunity… of blessings and gratitude? …Telling yourself that you're doing agood job? Are you listening to and believing that you're a great person whoenjoys being you…even when times are tough? Are you treating you with the samerespect that you would your best friend? Or do you often find yourselflistening to beat-up, never enough, and blame? And then feel guilty??? Thosethoughts that are self-defeating and negative - notice what you're thinking andthen - make a new choice.

You'rein charge of what you're thinking - as you change your thinking to thoughtsthat work for you rather than in opposition, you'll see that your life willtoo.

Thegreatest gift that you can give yourself is being your own best friend.

Imaginethat … a life long friend … always and forever! Now that's something to getenthused about!
